It's unknown what area he'll be focused on, but he told gaming site Gamasutra that he "personally feel[s] that Google hiring someone specifically to focus on games is a signal from the company that they recognize the growing importance of games as a medium."
At Sony, he was the manager of developer relations, so is certainly well-placed to handle the increasing interest in the various platforms Google's got its fingers stuck in
